Fact Check: Following a US military operation, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured on January 5, 2026. Now a photo is going viral on social media featuring Maduro and Cilia appearing in a US court. In the image, injuries can be seen on Cilia's face. Some users are sharing the photo, claiming that the photo is from Cilia’s appearance in the US court.
Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral image was created using an AI tool. It is not real.
What is the viral post?
Facebook user 'Jago Bharat Jago' shared the photo (archive link) on January 8, 2025, with the caption, "This is the photo of Venezuelan President Madurai's wife during her appearance in the US court. It is clearly visible that she was beaten very badly before her arrest. Her eyes are damaged, and her head is also fractured. If such an incident had happened in India, where such an act had happened with a Christian woman, then by now Christian missionaries of the entire India and countries of the entire world would have gone mad beating their chests, but because this crime has been committed by a Christian Trump himself, that is why everyone is silent."
Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we first performed a Google search using relevant keywords. Our investigation led us to video news stories uploaded to the YouTube channels of CNN, WFAA, and CBS Miami. These videos, uploaded on January 6, 2026 feature Maduro and Cilia's court appearance. The viral image is not used in these videos; rather, a sketch is used in the CNN and CBS Miami video news stories.
This made the viral image suspicious. To determine the potential AI manipulation, we tested it with AI image detection tools. TruthScan found the image to be 93 per cent AI-probable.
The site engine indicated a 77 per cent probability of a possible AI manipulation.
Comparing Cilia Flores’s actual recent appearance against the viral image reveals significant inconsistencies..
According to a report published on CBS News' website on January 6, 2026, "Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and other charges before a judge in federal court in Lower Manhattan. They are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after being captured by US forces during an attack. Meanwhile, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as acting president."
According to a report published on Fox News website, "According to Maduro's wife's lawyer, prosecutor Mark Donnelly, Cilia came to court with bandages on her face and complained of bruises on her ribs. Donnelly told the court that Cilia Flores suffered ‘significant injuries’ when the US military raided the couple's compound in Caracas on Saturday. Donnelly requested that Flores undergo a full X-ray to determine if any of her ribs were broken in the incident."
According to a report published on the New York Times website on January 5, "Cilia appeared in a Manhattan court with bandages on her face and a bruise over her right eye. Her lawyer said these injuries were sustained when she was captured by US forces. Mark Donnelly, the Texas lawyer representing Cilia, said Maduro's wife suffered "significant injuries" during her capture in Caracas on January 3, including rib fractures and bruising. Donnelly demanded a full-body X-ray of Cilia."
To verify further, we contacted JP Ranjan, a senior correspondent covering foreign affairs at Dainik Jagran, regarding this matter, who confirmed that both were produced in court. However, no photographs have shown bruises on Celia's face.
Lastly, we scanned the profile of the user who shared the AI-generated photo and found that the user has approximately 1.92 lakh followers.
Conclusion: Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife, Cilia, were arraigned in a Manhattan court. Cilia appeared with facial injuries and bandages. However, the viral image is AI-generated, not real.
