France Car Ramming Attack: A shocking incident unfolded on Wednesday morning on the holiday island of Ile d’Oleron, off the west coast of France, after a man deliberately rammed his vehicle into pedestrians and cyclists, leaving at least ten injured and four in critical condition. The attack, which spanned multiple locations on the island, has sparked widespread concern over public safety and the motive behind what authorities are treating as attempted murders.
According to local officials, the 35-year-old suspect intentionally drove his car through crowds as he travelled between two villages, striking several victims, including a young girl. Dolusd’Oleron Mayor Thibault Brechkoff confirmed that the individual’s reckless path spanned several kilometres before he eventually abandoned his vehicle near a bakery.
Witnesses reported scenes of chaos as pedestrians scrambled to safety. Emergency services rushed to the scene, transporting those critically injured to nearby hospitals.
Vehicle Found Burning, Gas Canister Discovered
Before fleeing on foot, the suspect attempted to set the vehicle on fire. Authorities later discovered a gas canister in the back seat, raising questions over whether further harm was intended. Police pursued the suspect and managed to subdue him using a stun gun. He was taken into custody in Saint-Pierre-d’Oleron.

Suspect Shouted Religious Phrase During Arrest
As officers restrained him, the attacker allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is greatest,” confirmed local prosecutor Arnaud Laraize to Sud Ouest newspaper, as cited by Reuters. The phrase, while commonly used in religious contexts, has also appeared in previous extremist-linked attacks, prompting heightened scrutiny.
Reports indicate the suspect was already known to local police, though details of his past offences have not yet been revealed. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the attack in a post on X, stating that national police forces have been mobilised to secure the area and support victims.
