Thionville Shooting: One person died while five others sustained injuries when masked gunmen opened fire on a wedding procession in northeastern France's Thionville city. According to AFP, the attack is likely a result of drug mafia rivalry, and the attack was a part of settling scores between gangs. The fatal shooting rocked the wedding hall in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when around 100 guests were present at the event.
Among the injured, two were reported seriously wounded with one in the critical care, AFP report stated. The attackers fled the scene after the firing, it further stated.
"At a quarter past one in the morning, a group of people went outside to smoke in front of the hall, and then three heavily armed men arrived and opened fire in their direction," a policeman was reported as saying.
The perpetrators arrived on a 4*4 vehicle, probably a BMW, the officials further said. While the police said that it was not immediately clear from which direction the attackers came, questions arose on the law and order situation in Thionville, a town located at the border of France with Luxembourg and Germany.
Police officials suspect that the violence was a result of a settling of scores related to drug trafficking.
"The wedding itself wasn't the target; it was individuals attending the wedding," a source stated.
On Sunday morning, a glass door riddled with bullet holes was visible at the scene.
This came after a similar drug-related shooting incident left five injured in the neighbouring town of Villerupt in May 2024, the AFP report added.
