Apart from being a powerful leader in world geopolitics, Russian President Vladimir Putin is also known for his public displays of religious devotion. Despite Russia being a secular state, Putin identifies as a Russian Orthodox Christian, frequently attending church services and appearing alongside senior clergy. Analysts say his faith plays a dual role, both spiritual and political, intertwining with Russian nationalism and influencing domestic policies.
One of the most striking demonstrations of Putin’s Orthodox faith is his annual icy dip ritual, performed to commemorate the baptism of Jesus. On January 19, 2022, the Russian president swam in a reservoir near Moscow with temperatures hovering around -10°C (14°F).

Wearing only shorts, he crossed himself before and after plunging into the freezing water. This ritual took place at Lake Seliger, about 250 miles north of Moscow, after a trip to St. Petersburg and visits to religious sites, including the St. Nilus Stolobensky Monastery in the Tver Region.
Epiphany Celebration And Symbolism
The ritual, part of the Epiphany celebration, is sanctioned by Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church and commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ. During the ceremony, Putin has been seen performing symbolic dips in honour of the Holy Trinity, highlighting both his devotion and physical endurance. State media often emphasises these moments to reinforce his image as a resilient and disciplined leader.
Ambiguity About Personal Beliefs
While Putin has publicly displayed Orthodox traditions, he has remained vague about his personal beliefs regarding God. In interviews, when asked directly whether he believes in a “supreme God,” he has refrained from giving a definitive answer. Observers note that this ambiguity allows him to appeal to a broad spectrum of Russian society while maintaining his strongman persona.=
Faith Shaping Domestic Policy
Putin’s Orthodox faith is also reflected in his domestic policies. He has consistently promoted traditional values, social cohesion, and state stability through close ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. His religious symbolism often strengthens his political legitimacy and reinforces a narrative of Russian cultural and spiritual identity.
