Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. During the meeting, PM Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Carney for inviting India to the G7 Summit. “I am very grateful to you for inviting India to G7 and I am also fortunate that I have got this opportunity to visit Canada once again after 2015 and connect with the people of Canada,” he said.
PM Modi also took the opportunity to congratulate Carney on his recent election win. “This is the first time I have got the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister after his election, so I congratulate him for his grand victory in this election and in the coming period, India and Canada will progress together in many areas with him,” PM Modi stated.

India-Canada Ties In Focus
Highlighting the importance of bilateral ties, PM Modi noted the deep economic and cultural linkages between the two democracies. “India and Canada relations are very important in many ways. Many Canadian companies have investments in India. The people of India also have a huge investment on Canadian soil,” he said.
Highlighting shared democratic values, PM Modi added, “Dedicated to democratic values, Canada and India will have to strengthen democracy together, will have to strengthen humanity.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed his appreciation, calling it a great honour to host Modi. He praised India's global importance, PM Modi's leadership, and their shared commitment to tackling key global challenges such as energy security, the energy transition, artificial intelligence, and the fight against terrorism and transnational repression.
Carrying G20 Legacy To G7
PM Modi also pointed to India’s role as the G20 Chair in 2023 and how it could help shape the G7 agenda. “India is the largest democratic country in the world. As the chair of the G20 Summit, India has taken many initiatives that are beneficial for the world. Today, there is a great opportunity to take the strong foundation that India has laid in the G20 in a new form towards its execution in the G7,” he said.
He reiterated India’s willingness to contribute positively on global platforms: “India has always been willing to use this opportunity for global good and will remain so in future too.”
