G7 Summit: Addressing the Outreach Session of the annual G7 summit underway in Italy's Apulia region, French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) during India's presidency of the G20 last year, news agency ANI reported.

G7 Summit Outreach Session: Pope Francis Speaks On AI

India, which is not a member of the G7, is participating at its ongoing annual summit as an outreach partner along with leaders of several other nations. The agenda for this year's G7 Outreach Session comprises Artificial Intelligence (AI), energy, Africa and the Mediterranean region. Pope Francis led talks on AI, becoming the first head of Catholic Church to address a G7 summit.

In his speech, he warned world leaders that AI must never be allowed to get the upper hand over humanity. An array of global chiefs warmly embraced the 87-year-old pope as he made his way around their huge oval table, pushed in a wheelchair as age and infirmity limit his mobility. The pope said AI represented an "epochal transformation" for mankind, but stressed the need for close oversight of the ever-developing technology to preserve human life and dignity.

"No machine should ever choose to take the life of a human being," he was quoted as saying by Reuters. The pope further asserted that people should not let superpowerful algorithms decide their destiny. "We would condemn humanity to a future without hope if we took away people's ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives, by dooming them to depend on the choices of machines," he warned.
