Emphasising the need for just and lasting global peace, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on Friday, praised India's readiness to offer its assistance in finding a political solution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Highlighting New Delhi's cross-bloc relationships with Russia as well the West, Scholz said that he approves India's support to a lasting and just peace in the region.
Scholz's remarks came after he attended a meeting with PM Modi during the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Businesses 2024 in New Delhi. On his two-day visit to New Delhi, a day after PM Modi returned from the Kazan BRICS summit, Olaf also held a bilateral discussion with Prime Minister Modi at his official residence earlier today.
"Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine affects Germany and India in many ways. No one can cleanse his or her eyes to the conflict and the impact it has on us," Olaf Scholz said.
"Therefore, I approve that India supports a lasting and just peace, and I am pleased about your readiness to make use of the reliable relations that you have developed with all parties to contribute to a political solution to the conflict...," the German leader said.
Earlier in September, Scholz had called for greater participation of major powers including India and China to take greater responsibility in resolving the war in Ukraine, TVP World reported.
Scholz's Call Follows Modi's BRICS Visit
The latest development follows PM Modi's visit to the Russian city of Kazan for BRICS summit 2024. The significant event drew huge global attention as PM Modi told Russian President Putin that India was ready to offer assistance in finding a peaceful solution to the Ukraine war.
"We have been in touch with all sides in the Russia-Ukraine problem. It has always been our position that all conflict can be solved with dialogue. We believe there should be peaceful solutions to conflicts. India is always ready to help bring peace," PM Modi had said while interacting with Putin on the sidelines of BRICS 2024.

'Two-State Solution To Middle East War'
Meanwhile, Scholz also called for a ceasefire in the Middle East.
"We need to see a ceasefire, the release of the hostages, and a political process that leads to a two-state solution," he said.
"In the Indo-Pacific, the Federal Armed Forces are also present and underlines that there too, we stand up for respect for a rules-based international order. The freedom of maritime trades must be respected everywhere," the German Chancellor said addressing the issues of the Indo-Pacific.
