Giorgio Armani Dies At 91:Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani, who transformed global style with his minimalist elegance and timeless tailoring, has died at the age of 91. The Armani Group confirmed his passing on Thursday, announcing in a statement that the designer “passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones” at his home. Armani had been recovering from an undisclosed illness in recent months and had missed his June runway shows.
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the company said in a post on Instagram. Known to employees and collaborators simply as “Mr. Armani,” the designer remained actively involved in his business until his final days.
From Piacenza To Global Fashion Icon
Born in 1934 in Piacenza, northern Italy, Armani initially pursued medicine but abandoned his studies after realising his aversion to blood. He began his career in fashion at La Rinascente, Milan’s famous department store, later joining Nino Cerruti’s design team. In 1975, with the encouragement of his partner Sergio Galeotti, Armani sold his car to launch his own brand. Galeotti’s death in 1985 was a personal loss, but Armani pushed forward, building one of the most recognisable fashion empires in the world.

Redefining Elegance
Armani’s designs revolutionised fashion with their clean lines, unstructured tailoring, and understated luxury. His beige suit, worn by Diane Keaton at the 1978 Oscars and Richard Gere’s wardrobe in American Gigolo (1980) catapulted the brand into Hollywood’s spotlight. By the 1980s, Armani had pioneered the concept of red-carpet dressing, personally outfitting stars like Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Beyond the runway, Armani extended his influence into cinema, designing wardrobes for films including The Untouchables, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Building Global Empire
What began as a single fashion label grew into a billion-dollar empire spanning clothing, accessories, fragrances, interior design, and luxury real estate. Armani’s empire includes Emporio Armani, A|X Armani Exchange, and his flagship Giorgio Armani line. Even in the face of changing market trends and declining sales, Armani remained steadfast, insisting that “consistency is my main strength.”
At 85, he was still opening flagship boutiques, overseeing Armani/Casa real estate projects, and reaffirming his belief in the importance of physical stores to showcase his brand’s essence.
Giorgio Armani's Net Worth
Giorgio Armani’s wealth is estimated at around USD 11.1 billion as of September 2025, according to Newsweek. Most of his fortune comes from his full ownership of the Giorgio Armani SpA fashion empire, which reported revenues of USD 2.7 billion in 2024.
A Legacy That Endures
Throughout his career, Armani held fast to his philosophy: “Elegance doesn’t mean being noticed, it means being remembered.” His enduring influence on fashion, from Hollywood to high streets, leaves behind a legacy of timeless sophistication.
With his passing, the world bids farewell to not just a designer, but a visionary who forever changed the way people dress, blending comfort with elegance and creating a brand synonymous with global luxury.
