Academy Award winner and lifestyle businesswoman Gwyneth Paltrow, ex-wife of Coldplay lead vocalist Chris Martin, has been roped in by AI and data workflow software startup Astronomer as a "temporary spokesperson" after the recent viral controversy surrounding the firm's now-ex-CEO and HR director. In a tongue-in-cheek promotional video uploaded by Astronomer on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Paltrow warmly introduces herself as an interim face of the company's over 300 employees, skillfully evading the scandal question while touting the company's business core.
"Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. I've been temporarily contracted to represent the 300-plus employees of Astronomer," Paltrow says in the 60-second clip, blithely accepting the joke of the moment. Rather than comment on the scandal that has shaken up the startup, the "Iron Man" star glosses over viral queries scrolled across the screen and gives a company pitch. "Yes, there is still space available at our Beyond Analytics event in September. We will now be going back to what we do best, producing game-changing results for our customers," she added.
Kiss Cam Scandal Pushes Astronomer Into Spotlight
The quirky PR video arrives in the aftermath of a now-infamous viral incident involving Astronomer's ex-CEO Andy Byron and former HR head Kristin Cabot, caught getting cozy on the Coldplay "kiss cam" during a concert near Boston. Both Byron and Cabot, both married to others, sheepishly ducked down from view, leading Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin to joke during the performance that the duo were either carrying on an affair or just extremely shy. The video went viral on social media, bringing shame to the startup as well as serious questions about executive behavior and company culture. Both executives have since quit.
Who Is Gwyneth Paltrow?
Gwyneth Kate Paltrow was born on September 27, 1972, in Los Angeles. She is best recognised for her Academy Award-winning performance in Shakespeare in Love and for her role as Pepper Potts in Marvel's Iron Man series. She has recently turned her attention toward business, starting the lifestyle company goop in 2008. The company has expanded to include e-commerce, wellness products, skincare, and cookbooks. Paltrow has been married once before to Coldplay's Chris Martin, with whom she has two children. The duo's high-profile "conscious uncoupling" in 2014 was both criticized and lauded. She then wed producer Brad Falchuk in 2018.
Astronomer, which is based in New York, has built a position in the enterprise AI and data pipeline orchestration market, providing solutions for organizations making use of Apache Airflow to automate their data workflows. The company's "Beyond Analytics" conference in September will likely highlight major innovations in AI-powered data automation, even after the recent executive shuffling. By using celebrity participation and humor to face public criticism, the company is trying to regain public trust while highlighting its overall purpose. The video with Gwyneth Paltrow can be an example of unconventional crisis communication in the technology sector.
