Has Trump Administration Made U-Turn On US Green Card Rules? Report Claims Pressure From CEOs

US President Donald Trump’s policies are reportedly creating challenges for businesses in the United States. Recently, the Trump administration announced that most Green Card applicants would have to return to their home countries to complete the process. However, reports have emerged that these proposed changes have sparked concern among major US businesses.

Trump's Immigration Policies Raise Concerns

A report by the Washington Post suggests that business leaders privately warned officials that such a policy could harm their workforce. They said the move could create uncertainty for thousands of skilled foreign workers. Following pressure from industry groups, the administration has reportedly softened its stance, although no formal clarification has been issued yet.

USCIS Rule Sparks Confusion Among Applicants

On May 22, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that most people applying for permanent residency, or Green Cards, would need to complete the process from their home countries unless there were "extraordinary circumstances." However, the department did not clearly explain who would be affected, leaving many applicants uncertain about their future.

Following this notification, business leaders, industry groups and company executives privately contacted the White House and several government departments, including Homeland Security, Labour and State, to raise concerns about the policy. The technology sector and the US Chamber of Commerce were among those that urged the administration to reconsider the move.

Trump Administration Signals Relief

Last week, the Trump administration reportedly reassured business leaders that most work visa holders would not be affected. USCIS officials also told reporters that most foreign nationals applying for permanent residency would not be required to leave the country, though no official public announcement has been made.

Meanwhile, Neil Bradley, Chief Policy Officer at the US Chamber of Commerce, said the organisation had heard reports that some recent Green Card applicants were still being allowed to complete the process without leaving the US. He welcomed the development and called on the administration to provide more clarity.
