US President Donald Trump’s campaign-style rally in North Carolina took an unusual turn on Friday after he veered from economic issues to make personal remarks about his wife, Melania Trump, while recalling the 2022 FBI search of his Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago.

The rally in Rocky Mount was billed as a stop to highlight inflation trends, unemployment data and efforts to reduce prescription drug prices ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. However, a significant portion of Trump’s nearly 90-minute address was spent revisiting grievances linked to federal investigations he has faced in recent years.

Remarks Draw Laughter

While criticising the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago, Trump told supporters that federal agents had entered Melania Trump’s personal space during the operation. “They went into my wife’s closet… they looked at her drawers,” Trump said, drawing audible reactions from the crowd. He went on to describe how her belongings were organised, adding that her undergarments were “folded perfectly, wrapped,” before joking that he believed “she steams them.”

The comments, unexpected in the context of an affordability-focused speech, sparked laughter among attendees and quickly circulated on social media, with clips from the rally going viral.

Context Of Mar-a-Lago Investigation

The FBI search in August 2022 was conducted after the National Archives and Records Administration raised concerns that presidential records, including classified material, had not been properly returned after Trump left office. Investigators were examining potential obstruction of justice and violations of laws governing the handling of sensitive documents.

During the search, authorities recovered 11 sets of classified records, some marked “top secret,” which are required to be stored only in secure government facilities. Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing. In June 2023, he was indicted by a federal grand jury over alleged mishandling of classified documents and pleaded not guilty. Additional charges were later added, but the case was dismissed in July 2024.

Although Trump did highlight recent data showing cooling inflation and reiterated his administration’s claims on job creation and drug price controls, his remarks frequently drifted to past political rivalries, media criticism and personal anecdotes.

Supporters behind him held placards reading “Lower Prices” and “Bigger Paychecks,” but advisers have privately acknowledged that Trump’s tendency to go off-script often overshadows his core economic messaging. As Trump continues a series of rallies aimed at sharpening his pitch on affordability and governance, Friday’s event served as another reminder of his freewheeling speaking style, one that blends policy claims with personal grievances and unscripted commentary.
