Following Israel's largest aerial offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, which resulted in 558 deaths, the Iran-backed group confirmed the death of a senior commander, Ibrahim Mohammed Kobeissi. Hezbollah, in a statement, announced that Kobeissi had been “martyred on the road to Jerusalem.” The Israeli military also reported that two other commanders from Kobeissi's force were "eliminated" during the offensive.

Israel's intensified campaign against Hezbollah has heightened concerns of a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with fears that it could further destabilise the Middle East region.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), responsible for Palestinian refugees, is preparing for a mounting crisis. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini highlighted the increasing strain caused by Israeli airstrikes, not only in Lebanon but also in Gaza and the West Bank, calling the situation a "triple tragedy."

“With three of its areas of operations turning into active frontlines, the embattled agency, already grappling with a severe financial shortfall, is poised to come under even more pressure. We already have Gaza, we already have the West Bank, so we have two fields of operation which have become active frontlines,” he said.

Lebanese officials have confirmed that most of the casualties in the past two days occurred in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region, both Hezbollah strongholds. The death toll has surged to 558, with more than 1,800 injured in the strikes.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern, warning that Lebanon stands on the edge of catastrophe. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has called for restraint, urging both sides to avoid further escalation of the conflict.
