A disturbing hidden-camera scandal in China has drawn attention to the country’s expanding “spy-cam porn” industry after a couple discovered that their most intimate moments had been secretly filmed inside a hotel room and uploaded online without their consent.
The footage, recorded by a concealed camera inside a hotel room in Shenzhen, southern China, showed the couple entering the room, placing their bags down, and later engaging in intimate acts. Unaware they were being filmed, the pair spent close to an hour in the room before checking out. The video was later uploaded to a pornographic platform and made accessible to thousands of viewers.
‘I Froze’: Victim Recognises Himself
Eric, a Hong Kong resident in his 30s whose name has been changed, told the BBC that he stumbled upon the video in 2023 while scrolling through a social media channel he regularly used to access pornography. Seconds into the clip, he realised the couple on screen was himself and his girlfriend, filmed just three weeks earlier during their stay in Shenzhen.

The discovery was particularly traumatic for Eric, who admitted he had previously watched secretly filmed videos, drawn by what he described as their “raw” and “authentic” feel compared to conventional adult content. “What drew me in is the fact that people don’t know they’re being filmed,” he said, adding that traditional porn felt “very staged.” After becoming a victim himself, he said he could no longer tolerate such content.

Fear, Isolation And Lasting Trauma
Eric’s girlfriend was initially sceptical but became horrified after watching the video, fearing friends, family, or colleagues might have already seen it. The couple avoided speaking for weeks and now take extreme precautions, including wearing hats in public and avoiding hotels altogether, to protect their identities.
The case reflects a broader issue across China. Despite new rules introduced last year requiring hotels to regularly inspect rooms for hidden cameras, enforcement remains weak. A BBC World Service investigation found that thousands of non-consensual videos filmed in hotel rooms have circulated online over the past decade.
Investigators identified multiple websites and apps claiming to operate hundreds of hidden cameras, with some even livestreaming guests’ activities. For victims like Eric and his partner, the scandal underscores the enduring threat to privacy and the serious gaps in protection despite official efforts to curb the abuse.
