Several Hindu devotees were assaulted on Sunday by pro-Khalistan supporters at a temple in Canada’s Brampton, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation. A purported video, now viral on social media, shows the attackers raising slogans and striking Hindu devotees with sticks. They are also seen carrying flags associated with the Khalistan movement.
Political figures including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Leader of Opposition Pierre Poilievre and Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya have criticised the act of violence.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau strongly condemned the attack on the Hindu community by the Khalistan supporters. In a post on X, Trudeau stated that every Canadian has a right to practice their faith and the violence at Hindu Sabha mandir was "unacceptable".
"The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable. Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely." He further thanked the regional police for "swiftly responding to protect the community and investigate this incident".
Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said that it was completely unacceptable to see violence. In a post on X, Poilievre wrote, "Completely unacceptable to see violence targeting worshippers at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today." "All Canadians should be free to practice their faith in peace. Conservatives condemn this violence unequivocally. I will unite our people and end the chaos," he added.
Indian origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya has also criticised the violence by stating that a "red line has been crossed." He emphasized the need for unity and respect among communities, calling for immediate action to ensure safety and security for all.
The Hindu Canadian Foundation, a non-profit community organisation, said that even women and children were also attacked in the temple. A group of Khalistani supporters were also holding a demonstration to commemorate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots before the attack took place, India Today reported, citing several reports.
