New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: ‘The weak can never forgive as forgiveness is the attribute of the strong’. Proving this quote of Mahatma Gandhi, right, a man in the US whose brother was shot dead by a woman police officer offered his forgiveness by asking the judge to hug the cop who killed his brother despite protests outside the court to end police violence against black people.
The former US police officer, Amber Guyger, who shot dead unarmed Botham Jean living in her neighbour in Dallas, has been sentenced to 10 years of jail on charges of murder. The victim was shot dead when he was watching TV and eating ice cream in his own apartment in September 2018.
Soon after the judge sentenced her 10 years of prison, the victim’s brother Brandt, asked the judge for permission to hug the convict who killed his brother. With a cracking voice on the witness stand, he said, “I don’t even want you to go to jail… I love you as a person. I don’t wish anything bad on you”. He then went on to say, “I don’t know if this is possible, but can I give her a hug, please,” he asked. “Please?”
The judge immediately allowed him on his request and Brandt was seen hugging and comforting Guyger inside the courtroom, eventually turning everyone present including the judge, emotional.
The video of this emotional scene went viral and people on social media applauded Brandt for his forgiving gesture. Many said that they have witnessed something like this for the very first time.

In her testimony, the cop Guyger said she mistook the victim’s apartment as her own and when she saw the door opened, she immediately fired upon him, thinking he was an intruder.
After this incident, many protests were staged demanding justice in Dallas.
