A Tamil Nadu-based doctor, Dr K Jagadeeswaran, has been detained in Sochi, Russia, under mysterious circumstances, leaving his family in distress. His wife, Yamini, has appealed to both the Central and Tamil Nadu governments to intervene and ensure his safe return to India.

What began as a routine visit to Russia in mid-September turned into a nightmare for the young doctor from Tiruvallur district. According to his wife, Jagadeeswaran, who had been working at a hospital in Armenia since completing his medical degree in 2022, he accompanied his friend Shekhar Manikandan to Russia as a translator. Manikandan, who runs an educational consultancy, had sought his help since Jagadeeswaran is fluent in Russian.

Legal Struggles In Russia

The duo reportedly left Chennai on September 15 and landed in Sochi the next day. Soon after their arrival, they were intercepted by Russian immigration authorities at the airport for questioning. Yamini told PTI that her husband was detained after officials discovered he could converse in Russian. “His friend was released and deported back to India after a week, but my husband was held back without a proper explanation. They accused him of disobeying immigration orders, which is completely false,” she said.

Jagadeeswaran was later handed over to local police and allegedly subjected to torture and humiliation during his detention. “He was denied food and medical care. His health deteriorated, and his sugar levels dropped drastically,” Yamini said, breaking down while describing his condition.

After weeks of uncertainty, the family managed to hire a lawyer in Sochi, who secured his release. However, the ordeal continues. Though his passport was returned, all other travel documents were withheld, leaving him stranded. “The Indian Embassy in Moscow told us that he must travel to Moscow to process his return to India. But he has no valid documents to move within Russia. He is currently under the protection of the Russian lawyer we hired,” Yamini explained.

Family Appeals For Government Help

Desperate for help, the family has reached out to multiple authorities, including the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi and the BJP Tamil Nadu office. Yamini said that despite filing several complaints, there has been no significant progress. “Through the media, I sincerely request the Indian and Tamil Nadu governments to take immediate steps for his safe and early return. My husband is unwell and mentally exhausted,” she pleaded.
