A 26-year-old man from India was shot dead after he objected to a man for urinating in public in the United States. According to a report by The Times of India, the victim, identified as Kapil, was working as a security guard in California, and objected to an unknown person who was urinating outside the premises.

Kapil took dunki root to reach US

Back in India, his native village in Haryana, Jind, locals felt agitated over his death. Speaking to ToI, Suresh Kumar Gautam, sarpanch of Kapil's native village, Barah Kalan, said the victim was the only son of his family and went to the US in 2022 through “donkey route”.

Also known as a "dunki" or "donkey flight," refers to an illegal and perilous journey taken by migrants, particularly from India to developed Western countries like the UK, US, or Canada. These routes involve complex, often human-smuggling networks that exploit migrants' desire for a better life.

Victim spent Rs 45 lakh to reach US

According to the sarpanch, Kapil had travelled to the US in 2022, allegedly through the "donkey route”. He said the victim crossed the jungles of Panama and scaled the Mexico border wall - a journey that cost his family around Rs 45 lakh.

The 26-year-old Indian man was arrested through legal proceedings and had been staying in California. "The entire village stands with the family," ToI quoted the village sarpanch, adding that the family plans to meet the deputy commissioner to request that Kapil's body be brought back to India. "We hope for the govt's full support," he said.

Similar incident in US

Earlier in May this year, an Indian-American entrepreneur, 30-year-old Akshay Gupta, was stabbed to death by another Indian man, 31-year-old Deepak Kandel, on a public bus in Austin, Texas. The attack happened without warning, according to the Austin Police Department. On the evening of May 14, police and emergency services responded to a call about a stabbing on a bus. They found Gupta with severe injuries, but he could not be saved.
