In a tragic incident, 30-year-old Akshay Gupta, a health startup co-founder of Indian origin, was fatally stabbed on a public bus on May 14 in Texas. The attack was unprovoked and carried out by another individual, identified as Deepak Kandel, 31. Austin Police and emergency medical services responded to a distress call at around 6:45 pm regarding a stabbing on a CapMetro bus in the 500 block of South Lamar Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found Gupta gravely injured after being stabbed in the neck.
First responders attempted life-saving measures on the scene, but Gupta was declared dead at 7:30 pm. According to the Austin Police Department (APD), their investigation revealed that the suspect, Deepak Kandel, had been seated next to Gupta on the bus. CCTV footage obtained by KXAN showed Akshay Gupta sitting quietly on a bus before he was suddenly and fatally stabbed in the neck by Deepak Kandel with a butcher-style knife, without any provocation.

After the bus stopped, Kandel calmly exited with other passengers and was later detained by patrol officers. He confessed to the crime, bizarrely claiming Gupta resembled his uncle. Kandel, who is homeless, has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Travis County Jail. Court records show he has a long criminal history dating back to 2016, with several serious offences left unprosecuted.

Akshay Gupta was a highly talented individual who had recently turned down a USD 300,000 job offer from Amazon to focus on his health-tech startup. A recipient of the prestigious O-1A visa, granted to individuals with extraordinary abilities in science, Gupta was considered a rising star in the entrepreneurial world.
