In a major development, Amir Hamza, a co-founder of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was critically injured at his home in Lahore, Pakistan, and is now in a military hospital, Times of India reported on Wednesday. The 66-year-old, who edited LeT's publications, is being protected by Pakistan’s intelligence agency (ISI). He was considered as Hafiz Saeed's "right hand".
On May 20, some Telegram channels linked to LeT supporters called it an "accident" and asked members to stay calm during this "crisis." As of now, there is no confirmation whether he was targeted by "unknown assailants" as reported with top terrorist leaders in Pakistan.
This incident happened just three days after another senior LeT member, Abu Saifullah, was killed by unknown gunmen in Pakistan. According to media reports, Hamza, one of LeT’s 17 founding members, was hurt in an accident at his home.
Who is Amir Hamza?
Born on May 10, 1959, Amir Hamza, also called Maulana Ameer Hamza, is a former Afghan mujahideen fighter and a key founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba. Known for his provocative speeches and writings, he’s a major LeT figurehead. Originally from Gujranwala in Pakistan’s Punjab province, Hamza was an active terrorist in India during the early 2000s. He and Saifullah were involved in the 2005 attack on the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. The US Treasury Department lists LeT as a terrorist group and has sanctioned Hamza as a terrorist. In 2002, he wrote a book called Qafila Da'wat aur Shahadat (Caravan of Proselytising and Martyrdom). In 2018, Hamza left LeT to start his own fundraising group, Jaish-e-Manqafa.
