As many as 4 persons were killed after a boat carrying 65 people capsized near Indonesia’s Bali. Over 38 persons have been missing after the incident, Reuters reported citing MetroTV. Rescue efforts have been launched in the region to find the missing people.
The Java-based agency said the data showed a total of 53 passengers and 12 crew members were on board the KMP Tunu Pratama Jayat. The Surabaya Search and Rescue Agency said in a statement that the boat sank in the Bali Strait at around 11:20 pm on Wednesday, as it sailed from Indonesia's main island, Java, to the famous holiday destination.
“The ferry's manifest data totalled 53 passengers and 12 passenger crews. The ferry, which is estimated to have sunk at 23:20 local time, also contained 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks,” the Java-based agency said.
Banyuwangi police chief Rama Samtama Putra said over 23 people were rescued and many of them were found in an unconscious state.
Boat accidents have become common in Bali. In March, a boat carrying 16 people capsized in rough waters off the coast of Bali, killing an Australian woman and injuring at least one other person.
In June, a ferry with 89 passengers on board capsized and sank in Bali’s Nusa Lembongan. However, all passengers were rescued safely.
