A report claiming that Infosys was slapped with a record Rs 283 crore (USD 34 million) fine for visa fraud has recently gone viral. However, it's important to note that this incident dates back to 2013 and is not a recent development. Infosys, a leading Indian IT and consulting giant co-founded by Narayana Murthy, had agreed to this settlement in what was then the largest civil fine ever imposed in an immigration fraud case in the United States. The case highlighted systemic visa violations and resulted in enhanced corporate compliance measures for the company.
According to the allegations, Infosys had violated US visa regulations by issuing B-1 visitor visas to its workers instead of H-1B visas, a practice, which allegedly allowed the Narayana Murthy-led tech giant to bypass strict wage and immigration requirements, giving the company an unfair advantage in lowering its labour costs.
The charges against Infosys further claimed that its blatant abuse of visa regulations undermined fair labour practices and integrity of the US immigration system. The company had agreed to the lawsuit against it and also agreed to implement stricter compliance measures at the corporate level to prevent future violation of immigration laws and maintain transparency in visa practices.
