In a chilling revelation that has shaken Israel’s security establishment, authorities have uncovered an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz. The prime suspect, 24-year-old Israeli citizen Roy Mizrahi, was arrested in April and charged with aiding an enemy during wartime, a serious offense under Israeli law that could result in life imprisonment.

According to a Channel 12 report, Mizrahi, along with 24-year-old accomplice Almog Atias, planted a powerful explosive device near Katz’s residence in the southern-central town of Kfar Ahim. The device reportedly detonated as the defense minister passed by, but miraculously caused no casualties. Officials have described the failed assassination attempt as potentially “the greatest Iranian revenge” yet thwarted.

Recruited Via Telegram, Paid In Crypto

The investigation, conducted jointly by the Shin Bet and Israel Police’s Lahav 433 major crimes unit, revealed that Mizrahi had been recruited by Iranian operatives through a Telegram channel. He was initially contacted by an agent known as “Alex,” who offered him $1 million to assassinate a scientist at the Weizmann Institute. Mizrahi refused when Alex declined to pay half of the money upfront.

Shortly after, he was approached by another Iranian agent, identified as “Getz,” who instructed him to place explosives near Katz’s home. Mizrahi later admitted during interrogation that, although the package was described as containing soap or drugs, he suspected it was a bomb. He proceeded anyway, driven by curiosity and the promise of cryptocurrency payment.

Failed Camera Surveillance Attempt

Investigators also uncovered that Mizrahi and Atias attempted to install two surveillance cameras in Kfar Ahim as part of the plot. They retrieved the devices from a house in Holon but were scared off when a security vehicle passed by. Panicking, they tossed the cameras into nearby bushes and fled the scene.

Both Mizrahi and Atias, residents of Nesher near Haifa, are set to appear in court in the coming days. Prosecutors are expected to seek their continued detention as the legal process unfolds.

Authorities noted that the assassination plot against Katz was just one of several planned by Iran in anticipation of a larger conflict with Israel. The exposure of the plot has heightened concerns over Iran’s growing espionage network and the vulnerability of Israeli citizens to foreign recruitment online.
