From blaming Israel to the US, the death of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has remained a topic of intrigue in global politics. Putting an end to months of speculation, an official investigation into the helicopter crash found that challenging climatic and atmospheric conditions were the cause, according to Iranian state TV on Sunday.
The final report from the Supreme Board of the General Staff of the Armed Forces indicated that the primary cause of the helicopter crash was the complex climatic conditions of the region in spring, according to state TV.
The report also mentioned that a sudden thick mass of dense fog contributed to the helicopter’s collision with a mountain. Additionally, the report found no evidence of sabotage in the helicopter’s parts or systems.
Earlier, there was widespread speculation that Israel, Iran’s rival, might have been involved in the helicopter crash that led to President Ebrahim Raisi’s death in East Azerbaijan province. However, an Israeli official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, denied any involvement, stating, "It wasn't us".
Israel and Iran have been longstanding adversaries. This conflict recently intensified with reciprocal drone and missile strikes earlier this year, raising concerns about a potential all-out war in the Middle East.
Earlier in May, former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif blamed the US for the helicopter crash that killed Raisi and other officials.
Zarif claimed that the unilateral sanctions of the US on Tehran have severely impacted Iran’s civil aviation industry, including a ban on the sale of aircraft spare parts. He criticised these actions, stating that they would be added to the list of "US crimes against the Iranian people”.
