Even after five weeks of war, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, remains out of public view. While he has been sharing messages through posts on X, there has been no confirmed public appearance. This has led to many questions about his condition and whereabouts.
Russian Envoy Reveals Whereabouts Amid Rumours
Amid the rumours that Mojtaba had been secretly moved to Russia for treatment of injuries that he sustained during the strikes, Russia’s ambassador to Iran, Alexey Dedov has dismissed such claims. According to him, the Supreme Leader is in the country and simply avoiding public appearances for “understandable reasons.” Addressing the reporters, the ambassador asserted Mojtaba “is refraining from making public appearances for understandable reasons.”
Mojtaba Khamenei took over after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during the days of the conflict. The United States and Israel had launched major strikes on Iran on February 28. Since then, the situation has remained tense in the region and speculation regarding Mojtaba’s whereabouts has grown.
Injured In US-Israel Strikes
Earlier, there were several claims from US officials that Mojtaba himself was seriously injured in those attacks, with some even suggesting he might have been badly disfigured or possibly killed. United States President Donald Trump has also made statements hinting that the Iranian leader may not be alive. However, the Iranian government strongly denied all such claims, insisting that Mojtaba is alive and still leading the country.
Meanwhile, intelligence agencies like the CIA and Israel’s Mossad are believed to be actively trying to track his exact location. Also, the role of Russia in the conflict is under close watch. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Washington is carefully monitoring what Russia and China are doing in relation to Iran. Moscow has repeatedly denied helping Iran in the war.
