The Israeli military launched airstrikes targeting power plants, a seaport and oil facilities in Yemen's port city of Hodeidah on Sunday. According to an official statement, dozens of air force aircraft were involved in the operation focused on destroying infrastructure sites, including power plants and the seaport at Ras Issa and Hodeidah. The strikes followed missile attacks by Yemen's Houthi militants on Israel over the preceding two days.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the airstrikes were carried out on locations where Iranian weapons were allegedly transferred to the Houthis. Israel justified the strikes by accusing the Houthi militants of operating under the direction of Iran and cooperating with Iraqi militias to target Israel and destabilize the region. The attacks caused widespread power outages in Hodeidah, as reported by residents.

Tensions have flared between Israel and the Houthi movement since the start of the Gaza war on October 7, with Houthis repeatedly launching missile and drone strikes at Israel in solidarity with Palestinians. Most recently, the Houthis fired a ballistic missile toward Ben Gurion International Airport on Saturday, which Israel successfully intercepted. A similar missile was shot down on Friday.

Iran condemned Israel's airstrikes on Yemen, with Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani criticising the targeting of a power plant and fuel facilities. The conflict in Yemen has intensified with Houthi attacks reaching deep into Israeli territory, including a recent hypersonic missile strike that hit central Israel, triggering air raid sirens and civilian evacuations.

The Israeli airstrikes come amid a broader escalation in the region, with Israel also conducting military operations in Lebanon and facing continued challenges from Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah.
