Japan has issued a warning that there is a 1% chance of a massive “megaquake” occurring within the next week. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has urged residents along the Pacific coast to stay alert and prepare evacuation plans as a precaution.

The Japan Trench and Chishima Trench have a long history of producing large tsunamigenic earthquakes. Experts say Monday’s quake briefly increased stress levels along these plate boundaries.

A total of 182 municipalities from Hokkaido down to Chiba are currently under heightened watch. These communities lie along fault zones where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath Japan, creating immense geological pressure.

PM Takaichi urged people to stay informed through official channels and “protect their own lives first.” She stressed that economic and social activity should continue, but with heightened awareness.

Residents in the advisory zone are urged to sleep in regular clothing rather than pyjamas, keep shoes and helmets near their beds, and plan quick evacuation pathways. Authorities emphasise the importance of responding immediately to strong tremors.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the nation on Tuesday following the offshore quake. She confirmed about 30 injuries and a residential fire. While the damage is far less severe than past disasters, she warned that “the likelihood of a large earthquake from Hokkaido to Sanriku is now higher than normal.”

Cabinet disaster-prevention official Tsukasa Morikubo emphasised that no one can pinpoint when or where a megaquake may occur. The advisory simply reflects a short-term rise in probability.

Municipalities from Hokkaido to Chiba are inspecting emergency food stocks, fuel reserves and communication equipment. Towns such as Oarai in Ibaraki have tested wireless communication units, while Iwaki in Fukushima urged residents to register for emergency alerts.

Local governments across northern Japan have started activating emergency procedures following the advisory issued on Tuesday.

The catastrophic magnitude-9.0 quake in 2011 struck just two days after a magnitude-7.3 tremor in nearly the same region. With Monday’s quake showing a similar pattern, authorities issued the advisory out of caution.

Authorities warn that a megaquake in the Hokkaido–Sanriku zone could unleash a 30-meter tsunami, kill nearly 200,000 people and cause economic losses of 31 trillion yen. Winter conditions could lead to tens of thousands suffering hypothermia.

Japan’s modern preparedness is rooted in a long, painful history. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake devastated Tokyo and Yokohama, leaving more than a hundred thousand people dead. Decades later, the 1995 Kobe earthquake again exposed how vulnerable dense urban areas can be when the ground shifts.

But nothing compares to the 2011 Tōhoku catastrophe, when a magnitude-9.0 offshore quake unleashed a towering tsunami that tore through coastal towns and led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Japan’s warning system is one of the most advanced in the world. When an earthquake is detected offshore, sensors immediately estimate the likelihood of a tsunami. If a threat is possible, alerts go out within minutes through sirens, text messages, public broadcasts, and coastal evacuation signs.

Even small waves prompt swift responses. For a country with such a long coastline, the warning system is as essential as the seawalls themselves.

A tsunami doesn’t begin on the shore; it starts far below the ocean surface. When a section of the seabed suddenly shifts due to a powerful earthquake it pushes a massive column of water upward. That displaced water spreads across the ocean at jet-like speeds, forming waves with enormous energy.

As these waves approach the coast, the shallower water slows them down but forces them to rise dramatically in height. A wave that was barely noticeable in the deep ocean can suddenly rise several meters at landfall. This transformation is what makes tsunamis so destructive and so unpredictable.

The islands sit at a geological crossroads, where four major plates constantly grind and collide. Every shift, slip, or strain in these plates builds pressure beneath the country, and when that pressure releases, the ground shakes.

This relentless tectonic movement is the key reason that nearly one-fifth of the world’s earthquakes occur around Japan. With so many fault lines running offshore, even moderate quakes can produce tsunamis that reach the coast in minutes. Living here means living with one eye on the sea and the other on the sky.

Monday night’s quake struck in the broader region devastated by the 2011 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami, which killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis. Meteorologists said the latest tremor underscores the need for constant preparedness in one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions.

The US Geological Survey recorded multiple aftershocks, including a magnitude 6.6 tremor and later a 5.1 quake. None of these triggered new tsunami warnings, but authorities urged residents to remain away from sea walls and coastal rocks until seismic activity settles

Government authorities estimated that over ninety thousand people left their homes following the first tsunami alert. Many sought temporary shelter at schools, community centres, and military bases. At Hachinohe Air Base, nearly five hundred evacuees rested on blankets and folding mats while awaiting updates from local authorities.

An Indian woman living in Tokyo shared a video describing the scenes of panic and chaos across the city. In her clip, she speaks in Hindi, saying, "Itna tez earthquake tha ki meri toh jaan hi chali gayi thi, kyonki vo ruk hi nahi raha tha. Almost 3-4 minutes tak earthquake tha aur itna tez tha ki mai bahar aa gayi but usually yahan pe koi bahar hi nahi aata kyunki inhe dar hi nahi hai."

In her caption, she wrote, "I have experienced hundreds of earthquakes in Japan but not one like this one, a very long 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Tokyo area, around even a Tsunami warning has been issued.",

Train operators suspended Shinkansen services across parts of the Tohoku line immediately after the quake. Local rail services also halted until track inspections could be completed. At New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, parts of a terminal ceiling collapsed, forcing two hundred passengers to remain inside overnight. On Tuesday morning, local airline authorities rescheduled departures and diverted incoming flights.

Shortly after the quake, tsunami waves between twenty and seventy centimetres were observed in multiple ports. The JMA initially warned that three-metre waves could strike the northeastern coastline, prompting immediate evacuation orders in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. By the early morning hours, the agency lifted all tsunami advisories as sea conditions stabilised.

Eyewitness accounts from Hachinohe, Aomori and southern Hokkaido described scenes of gridlock as residents attempted to flee coastal roads. Drivers reported accidents as panicked households rushed inland. Several families arrived at evacuation centres barefoot, carrying only blankets or backpacks.,

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority said around 450 litres of water spilled from a spent-fuel cooling pool at the Rokkasho reprocessing plant. Later IAEA reassured the public that there was no safety risk and water levels remained normal. Other facilities, including nuclear plants operated by Tohoku Electric and Hokkaido Electric, reported no abnormalities.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi convened an emergency task force, stressing that the government is “putting people’s lives first.” She urged residents to remain alert, noting that JMA’s one-week “megaquake advisory” remains in effect.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed at least 30–33 people injured, most due to falling debris. One person was reported seriously hurt. Minor damage was observed in several coastal towns, including cracked ceilings at New Chitose Airport, where around 200 passengers were stranded overnight.

More than 800 households lost electricity, and Shinkansen bullet train operations were halted for safety inspections. Power and rail services gradually resumed by morning across most affected areas.

Ports in Iwate and Aomori recorded tsunami waves between 20 and 70 cm, prompting immediate evacuations along parts of the Pacific coastline. The JMA initially warned of possible waves up to 3 metres.

The earthquake hit at 11:15 p.m., with its epicentre located about 80 km off Aomori Prefecture and at a depth of roughly 50 km, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The tremors were felt widely across the Tohoku region, registering an “upper 6” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in Hachinohe.
