Japan Earthquake Tsunami Warning Live Updates: A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday night, shaking coastal towns from Aomori down to Iwate and sending thousands of residents rushing to higher ground. The quake hit just after 11 p.m., offshore and at considerable depth, but strong enough to rattle buildings for long seconds and knock objects from shelves across the region.
As Tuesday began, the picture grew clearer. Tsunami advisories were gradually lifted, and damage surveys showed mostly light structural impact across coastal towns. Train services, including the Tohoku Shinkansen, began resuming after hours of safety checks, and power crews worked through the dawn to restore electricity to affected neighbourhoods.
Although the immediate threat has passed, authorities are not relaxing. The meteorological agency issued a one-week advisory, explaining that yesterday’s strong quake slightly increases the chance of another major quake. Minor aftershocks continued through the morning, including a 6.6 tremor offshore, a reminder that the seismic activity has not settled yet.

Japan Earthquake Tsunami Warning Live Updates: Why The Region Is Prone To Quakes
The islands sit at a geological crossroads, where four major plates constantly grind and collide. Every shift, slip, or strain in these plates builds pressure beneath the country, and when that pressure releases, the ground shakes.
This relentless tectonic movement is the key reason that nearly one-fifth of the world’s earthquakes occur around Japan. With so many fault lines running offshore, even moderate quakes can produce tsunamis that reach the coast in minutes. Living here means living with one eye on the sea and the other on the sky.
