A gunman was killed and three policemen were injured after a shooting incident near the Israeli Embassy in Jordan. The Jordanian police shot the gunman who fired at a police patrol and cordoned off the Rabiah neighborhood of Amman, Reuters reported, citing security sources.
The security forces further claimed that the gunfire caused a panic among the authorities as the police and ambulances rushed to the area near the embassy where gunfire was heard. The police officials urged the residents to stay inside their homes while they searched for the culprits. In a statement, Jordan's Public Security Directorate said that the police killed the shooter. “He was chased and surrounded, so he started firing gunshots at the security force, which in turn applied the rules of engagement, which resulted in the killing of the perpetrator,” the statement said.

The area near the Israeli embassy is heavily secured by the police forces, as several of the rallies have been held there by the protesters against Israel. The security was further increased after an escalation in tension between Israel and Hamas as the protests increased after Israel's attack on Gaza. The forces further informed that many citizens of Jordan have their roots in Palestine. Many of the Palestinians were forced to fly to Jordan in the conflicts that led to the creation of Israel in 1948.

Jordanian riot police fired tear gas against the hundreds of protesters in March as they marched towards the embassy against the military action by Israel. Amir Weissbrod, Israeli ambassador, has been in Israel since leaving, citing security reasons. Bilateral relations were established between the two countries in 1994, but it took a hit in 2017 following a shooting incident in Amman involving an Israeli embassy guard. Jordan's bilateral relations and its peace treaty with Israel are opposed by many of the Jordanian citizens, as they see it as betraying the rights of their Palestinian compatriots.
