Kash Patel, the newly appointed Indian-origin director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), recently shared an article emphasising how his Hindu upbringing has played a pivotal role in shaping his values and leadership approach. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Patel underscored the influence of dharma (righteous duty), karma (action with accountability), and seva (selfless service) in his personal and professional journey.

The article, which delves into Patel’s early life and moral compass, highlights how Hindu teachings have guided his decisions. “Kash’s upbringing was rooted in the values of Hinduism—hard work, respect, and education—values that have influenced his worldview,” it states. It also notes that his parents instilled in him the principle of respecting all religions, aligning with the message of universal tolerance famously delivered by Swami Vivekananda in his historic 1893 speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago.

During a congressional hearing, Patel concluded his remarks with a phrase seldom heard in such formal settings: “Jai Shri Krishna,” meaning “Victory to Lord Krishna.” His words quickly became a topic of discussion on social media, particularly within the Indian diaspora.

Oath on the Bhagavad Gita

In a break from tradition, Patel chose to take his oath of office on the Bhagavad Gita instead of the Bible. His swearing-in ceremony was conducted by former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, further marking a historic moment for Indian Americans and Hindu representation in US government institutions.

Living The American Dream

Addressing an audience after taking his oath, Patel emphasised the significance of his appointment, stating, “I am living the American dream, and anyone who thinks the American dream is dead, look right here. You are talking to a first-generation Indian who is about to lead the law enforcement agency of the greatest nation on earth. That can’t happen anywhere else.”

His remarks resonates widely, especially among Indian Americans, who see his rise as a moment of immense pride and inspiration. His story reflects the contributions of immigrants to the United States and how diverse cultural backgrounds continue to enrich the nation’s leadership.
