At least fourteen individuals, including five children, were hurt on Saturday when a mortar shell that was fired from an unknown location hit a residential house in Pakistan's northwest Kurram district, bordering the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, official sources quoted by PTI reported. The mortar shell landed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province's Kachhi Kamar village, damaging the house partially and sending a wave of panic among the residents. The total injured people includes five children between the ages of five and eleven, according to local sources. Villagers immediately rushed to rescue those trapped inside the damaged house and shifted them to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The doctors at the local hospital asserted that all the victims are undergoing treatment and their health is being closely monitored. Local police authorities have sealed off the site and initiated an investigation to track the source of the mortar shell. No organisation has taken responsibility for the attack so far. Security patrols have been strengthened in the volatile border area, which has seen occasional cross-border firing and militant activity over the past few years.
Tensions On The Pakistan-Afghanistan Border
The Kurram district, bordering Afghanistan with a porous frontier, has been frequently in the limelight because of cross-border raidings and security issues. Such incidents point towards Pakistan's tribal areas having a tenuous security environment.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Additional security measures are being taken to prevent further untoward incidents in the border areas.
