A regular session at Pakistan’s National Assembly took on an unexpectedly comical turn when Speaker Ayaz Sadiq spotted money on the floor and dozens of parliament members rushed there to claim it.

A video clip capturing an incident, which has caused laughter as well as outrage on various social media platforms, still continues to provide a peek into the politics and culture of the country.

Speaker Discovers Money On Floor

The incident unfolded when Speaker Sadiq noticed ten PKR 500 notes (Rs 16,500) lying around one of the front rows. Interrupting the business of the House, he held up the cash and asked, “Whose money is this? Whoever it belongs to, please raise your hand.”

What followed was nothing short of a spectacle. Nearly a dozen MPs stood or raised their hands in response, far exceeding the number of notes found. The Speaker paused for a moment, looked around the chamber and remarked dryly, “There are 10 notes and twelve owners.” The comment drew loud laughter from members present, momentarily easing the tense atmosphere that often surrounds parliamentary proceedings in Pakistan.

A probe conducted by the Assembly staff eventually cleared up the confusion. According to Aaj TV news, the money belonged to the PTI leader, Muhammad Iqbal Afridi. Afterwards, he fetched it from the office because he realized it had slipped out of his pocket. The video clip eventually created buzz on various online platforms, with people composing remarks about it.

Social Media Mocks Lawmakers

Netizens on various online platforms were swift with reactions. Some joked that the “honesty test” had exposed the true nature of Pakistan’s political class. “The system’s rotten eggs,” one user wrote on X, while another commented, “How honest our parliament is can be seen by this scenario.”

Another Pakistani user quipped that the lawmakers, who “draw salaries and perks in millions,” still appeared eager to claim a few thousand rupees. A Facebook comment dragged PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz into the conversation, joking that the money “should have been handed to the party to help her lose weight.”
