Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed approval on Thursday regarding the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, while also stressing the importance of securing the release of hostages held by the militant group.

Confirming the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, Benjamin Netanyahu took to X to warn Hamas to lay down its arms and release all Israeli hostages.

Netanyahu stated, "To the Hamas terrorists, I say your leaders are fleeing and will be eliminated. I urge anyone holding our hostages to lay down their arms and return them; we will allow you to leave and live. Those who harm our hostages will bear the consequences, and we will hold them accountable. The return of our hostages presents an opportunity to achieve all our objectives and brings us closer to ending the war."

The Israeli military confirmed on Thursday that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed on Wednesday in southern Gaza. After identifying his body, the military stated that numerous operations by Israeli forces and the Shin Bet in the past year, particularly in recent weeks, had restricted Sinwar's movements, ultimately leading to his elimination.

Yahya Sinwar, one of the masterminds behind the attacks, had been a prime target for Israel since then. Sinwar, appointed as Hamas's leader in Gaza in 2017, spent 22 years in an Israeli prison before being released in a 2011 prisoner exchange.

His reported death follows the July assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas's political leader, in Tehran, an act widely attributed to Israel. After Haniyeh's death, Sinwar was appointed as the overall leader of Hamas.

Nearly 250 people were taken hostage during the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, with about half released and around 70 still believed to be held in Gaza.
