An Indian vlogger has put himself at the centre of an international outcry after releasing a string of obscene and derogatory videos aimed at Turkish women, drawing sharp backlash from both Indian and Turkish audiences. Malik SD Khan, alias Malik Swashbuckler on social media, is at the centre of a developing controversy, with unverified reports that Turkish police have arrested him. The controversy erupted after Malik shared several videos on YouTube and Instagram, where he is seen making derogatory and insulting remarks about Turkish women. Speaking in Hindi, to avoid being understood locally, Malik called women "maal" and "item", words that objectify women in an insulting way. In one of the most horrific videos, Malik allegedly made a joke in Hindi about having sex with his Turkish tour guide. The video, reported by various Turkish social media users, has since been widely criticised, which has created calls for legal action.

Social Media Backlash Forces Account Deactivation

Under tremendous backlash, Malik Swashbuckler has removed his YouTube channel and Instagram account. But most of his provocative videos remain online across social platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and Telegram. Screenshots and recordings of the expelled videos depict Malik entering a Turkish shop, accusing the shop owner of a lack of the Indian flag, and going on to make offensive remarks. He repeatedly insulted using abusive language and made culturally insensitive remarks.

According to Turkiye Today, Turkish authorities detained Malik last week for offensive content. Yet, there has been no confirmation or statement from the Turkish police so far. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not responded to questions regarding any diplomatic outreach to Ankara on this matter. The incident comes in the wake of increasing tensions between India and Turkey, where relations have soured in the wake of Ankara's public support for Pakistan on the international stage. This scandal may further add to the problems, with some Turkish citizens expressing themselves on social media demanding an explanation and official apology from Indian authorities.

If allegations are made under Turkish anti-cybercrime and sexual harassment laws, Malik might be severely punished, with the possible imposition of jail or deportation. At the same time, online observers are calling for social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram to become more vigilant in tracking travel bloggers advocating for hate or harassment while overseas.
