A shocking act of violence in northern Mali has sparked nationwide outrage after suspected jihadists kidnapped a popular TikTok influencer and publicly executed her in front of residents. The victim, identified as Mariam Cisse, had built a following of nearly 95,000 subscribers by posting commentary and videos about everyday life in the city of Tonka, located in the Timbuktu region.

According to her family, Mariam was abducted on Thursday while livestreaming at a local fair. Armed men seized her, accusing her of collaborating with the Malian army. The allegations, made without evidence, centered around claims that she was providing troops with information on extremist movements. Her brother, who was forced to witness the ordeal, confirmed that jihadists accused her of “informing the army of their movements”.

Killed Over Army Support

Witnesses reported that Mariam was initially taken outside the city. However, in a chilling display meant to intimidate civilians, she was returned the following day and executed publicly in Independence Square, a prominent and symbolic location in Tonka. Local officials said militants hoped the act would deter residents from openly supporting government forces.

The atrocity comes amid a prolonged insurgency that has gripped Mali since 2012. Radical groups, including Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-linked organisation, continue to operate across the northern region, despite repeated military campaigns by the ruling junta.

Mariam’s rising popularity made her a recognisable figure. Her videos, often humorous or light-hearted, highlighted community culture, social issues, and life under instability. She had also shared photos dressed in military attire, expressing vocal support for Malian soldiers. For jihadist groups, such public endorsements made her a visible target.
