Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Nepalese counterpart, Sushila Karki, for the first time following her appointment after deadly Gen Z protests in the Himalayan country. During the conversation, which took place on Thursday, PM Modi expressed grief over the recent deaths during protests led by the young generations in Nepal and assured New Delhi’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability.

Earlier on Saturday, PM Modi congratulated Karki on taking oath as the prime minister of an interim government in Nepal, and underscored India's commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of the neighbouring country. However, today marked the first official call between the two leaders after the dramatic exit of KP Sharma Oli.

Nepal gets first woman PM

Former Chief Justice Karki, 73, was sworn-in as the country's first woman prime minister, ending days of political uncertainty after the abrupt resignation of Oli this week following wide-spread anti-government protests against a ban on social media and alleged corruption. During the agitation led by the Gen Z group, protesters set fire to houses of political leaders, important government buildings, including the Parliament, business establishments and shopping complexes.

KP Oli's dramatic ouster

Oli quit on Tuesday shortly after hundreds of agitators entered his office demanding his resignation for the death of at least 19 people in police action during Monday's protests. Later, the toll crossed 50-mark. The prime minister will form a small Cabinet on Sunday, two days after her swearing-in ceremony, as offices are closed on Saturday.
