Six people were shot and killed in a series of shootings across multiple locations in this eastern Iowa city on Monday in what authorities described as an apparent domestic dispute. According to ABC 11, the suspected gunman, identified by police as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after officers confronted him.

The violence unfolded at two residences and a nearby business, leaving the small community in shock. The first incident was reported around 12:12 p.m. local time when authorities responded to a home and discovered four people dead from apparent gunshot wounds. McFarland had already fled the scene by the time officers arrived. Police later located him on a trail along the Mississippi River nearby.

Shooter killed himself

"While talking to Ryan Willis McFarland, he took his own life," Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies said during a press briefing. Officers and emergency medical personnel attempted to render aid, but McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene. As the investigation continued, detectives received information suggesting there could be more victims. They subsequently discovered two additional men dead from apparent gunshot wounds, one at a second residence and another at a nearby business.

"Preliminary findings indicate the shootings stemmed from a domestic-related dispute," the Muscatine Police Department stated in a press release. "All victims are believed to be family members of the deceased suspect.

"Police have not yet released the names or ages of the six victims.

Chief Kies expressed the community's profound grief, stating, "Today I simply do not have the words -- this act of evil and what it has done to our community.

"Authorities noted that McFarland had a prior criminal record, though they did not provide further details. Officials emphasised that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

The incident remains under active investigation as detectives work to piece together the full sequence of events and motive. The multiple crime scenes have strained local resources, but authorities say they are committed to a thorough inquiry.This marks one of the deadliest single-day shooting incidents in Muscatine’s recent history, leaving residents grappling with the sudden loss of multiple family members in what appears to have been a targeted domestic tragedy.
