Myanmar Earthquake: After a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, the death toll has risen to 1,700, the country's State Administration Council said on Sunday. At least 139 people remain missing as rescue operations continue. The disaster caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, bridges, and dams, while power and communication outages have hindered rescue efforts.

Neighbouring Thailand also felt the quake’s impact, with 17 deaths reported in Bangkok, located 1,000 km from the epicenter. Authorities say 32 people were injured, and 83 remain missing, mostly from a collapsed 30-story under-construction building. As aftershocks continue to rattle the region, the death toll is expected to rise.

The UN estimates 18.6 million people in Myanmar need urgent aid, with nearly one-third of the population facing food insecurity. The World Food Programme (WFP) has also warned of ration cuts by April without USD 60 million in funding. Adding to the crisis, US aid cuts have impacted refugee camps and hospitals. The recent earthquake has worsened the situation, leaving Myanmar in a deepening humanitarian crisis.
