Earthquake in Nepal:  After a 6.4 magnitude strong earthquake jolted Nepal and parts of north India on Friday night at around 11:32 pm, the fatalities in Nepal rose to 140, whereas, the disaster left 150 injured. The destruction was rampant in Jajarkot and Rukum districts of Western Nepal, where buildings were completely flattened and houses were damaged, reported state-run Nepal Television.

While the focus of the earthquake was 10 kilometres beneath the earth's surface, officials at the National Earthquake Measurement Centre said that the epicentre was at the Lamidanda area in Jajarkot, 250 kilometres north-west of the capital Kathmandu. The latest quake was the third this month to hit the country.

1. India stands with Nepal- Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi took to X to express his solidarity with the quake-hit northern neighbour. PM wrote, "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery."

2. Nepal PM Pushpa Dahal Kamal Prachand reached the Jajarkot area to oversee the rescue and relief measures after the earthquake's damages killed 140 people. Accompanied by a 16-member medical team of the army, before leaving he expressed deep sorrow at the loss of lives and ordered security, rescue and relief teams to immediately respond.

3. The authorities are facing challenges in reaching the Jajarkot village, which has a population of 190,000 and is located at the epicentre. According to police official Namaraj Bhattarai, local officials have been unable to establish communication with the village. He mentioned that rescue and search teams are working to clear roads obstructed by dry landslides caused by the earthquake to access the affected areas, reported Reuters.

4. According to Harish Chandra Sharma, a government administration official, 17 people have been officially declared dead in Jajarkot district. Additionally, in Nepal's Rukum district, where many houses have collapsed, at least 20 people have lost their lives, as reported by police official Narvaraj Bhattarai to AP.

5. Intense tremors also swept through various northern Indian states, encompassing Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the Delhi-NCR region. Videos surfaced of Noida, Greater Noida, Delhi, and Gurugram residents flocking outside their houses to seek safe places during the earthquake.

6. Many villages and towns have also lost communication following the quake-led destruction. Police have reported that many residents are still buried under the debris, and efforts are underway to rescue them.
