Nepal descended further into political turmoil this week as violent anti-government protests intensified in Kathmandu and beyond. A shocking video circulating online captured Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel running down a street as a furious mob pursued him. Protesters struck and kicked the minister before security officers intervened, underscoring the deep public anger at the country’s leadership.

The attack followed days of unrest after police opened fire on crowds earlier in the week, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 300. What began as demonstrations against the government’s September 4 ban on 26 social media platforms has now spiralled into the biggest political crisis in years. The movement, led largely by young demonstrators identifying as “Gen Z”, has rocked the capital despite curfews and heavy police deployments.

Oli Resigns Amid Violence

Earlier today, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation after protesters stormed his residence and set it on fire. “I have resigned from the post of prime minister with effect from today… in order to take further steps towards a political solution and resolution of the problems,” he declared.

Oli’s departure was accompanied by the resignation of at least four cabinet ministers, including those handling home affairs, agriculture, youth and sports, and water resources. The collapse of the government reflects the scale of the crisis as protesters expand their demands.

Protesters Target Senior Leaders

The demonstrations have not spared other senior figures. Homes of cabinet ministers and government buildings were torched, while President Ramchandra Paudel’s residence was attacked. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Foreign Minister Arju Rana reportedly suffered injuries during clashes.

Finance Minister Paudel’s public thrashing has become symbolic of the people’s fury. In the video, more than two dozen protesters are seen chasing him, with one man kicking him and others striking blows before security officers managed to rescue him.

Despite the government reversing the social media ban late Monday, protests have continued. Demonstrators argue that the issue goes beyond online freedom and reflects years of corruption, lack of accountability, and police brutality.

In a statement, Gen Z leaders demanded the dissolution of Parliament, mass resignation of lawmakers, and suspension of those who ordered police to use lethal force against protesters. They also called for the creation of an interim government led by a figure nominated by protesters, as well as early elections.

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport has been closed, with the Nepali Army deployed to secure the facility. The unrest has paralysed the capital, with curfews failing to keep young demonstrators off the streets.
