PM Modi-Xi Meet: Ahead of the much-anticipated meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing has said that it will work with India to strengthen ties and properly handle differences. Xi is visiting India to attend the 18th BRICS Summit and is scheduled to meet PM Modi later on Saturday.

China Says Will 'Properly Handle Differences'

Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong said the two countries are arranging a bilateral meeting between the two leaders. This upcoming dialogue will mark the third consecutive year the two leaders have met, building on their previous discussions held in Kazan and Tianjin. Ambassador Xu emphasised that China is committed to working closely with India to execute the strategic guidance set by both leaders.

He highlighted the importance of handling bilateral relations from a strategic height and a long-term perspective. Furthermore, he noted that both nations aim to step up communication, enhance cooperation, and properly handle differences in order to foster a relationship as good neighbours and supportive partners helping each other succeed.

“China and India are arranging for the bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi. This will be the third year in a row for the two leaders to meet with each other, following their meetings in Kazan and Tianjin. China will work with India to act on the strategic guidance of the two leaders, handle the bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective, step up communication, enhance cooperation, properly handle differences, and be friends enjoying good-neighbourliness and partners helping each other succeed.”

Xi To Attend BRICS Summit

Chinese President Xi arrived in Delhi on Saturday at around 11:45 a.m. He was received by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh. His entourage includes Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese foreign minister. The bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Xi is scheduled for 5:45 pm.

Commenting on the meeting earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said it would be the third consecutive year that Modi and Xi have met, following their meetings in Kazan and Tianjin. “China will work with India to act on the strategic guidance of the two leaders, handle bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective, step up communication, enhance cooperation, properly handle differences, and be friends enjoying good-neighbourliness and partners helping each other succeed,” she said.

Xi’s visit comes as India and China continue efforts to normalise relations following the prolonged standoff in eastern Ladakh in 2020, which had significantly strained ties between the two countries However, relations have shown signs of improvement in recent years, with Xi and Modi meeting in Kazan and Tianjin.

Why It Matters

Mao Ning said the BRICS summit has become an important platform for solidarity and cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. She said BRICS countries have maintained the principles of openness, inclusiveness and mutual benefit since the grouping was established.

According to Mao, BRICS remains committed to promoting common development while supporting multilateralism, fairness and justice. She added that grouping has emerged as an important voice for the Global South. China attaches great importance to BRICS and actively participates in its various cooperation activities, Mao said.
