'China Values PM Modi's Remarks': Beijing Lauds India's Strategic Autonomy After BRICS Bilateral

Chinese foreign ministry on Monday lauded India's independent foreign policy after a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry, said that PM Modi told Jinping about India's independent foreign policy and that Beijing values his remarks.

According to a press release by the foreign ministry in Beijing, Jiakun said that the "most important consensus" was that "China and India should be partners, not adversaries."

"Prime Minister Modi said that India has an independent foreign policy, developing relations with China is not affected by any third party and that it will not allow any force to engage in anti-China activities on its territory. China values Prime Minister Modi’s statements," the statement said.

Guo further added that Xi emphasised that despite India and China having different national realities, the two countries should draw on each other’s strengths and support each other’s development.

"To promote the steady and sustained development of China-India relations, both sides need to calibrate the direction with an objective and rational strategic perception," he said.

Modi-Jinping meet

India-China relations saw a thaw amid steady progress on border situations. During the bilateral in New Delhi, PM Modi underscored that maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas is the "essential basis" for improving ties with China, the Ministry of External Affairs stated on Saturday.

The MEA added that the two sides have expressed "commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question proceeding from the political perspective of their overall bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the two peoples."

PM Modi said that "differences should not become disputes. "PM highlighted that both sides must be guided by three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest," the readout stated.
