An Indian-origin man has been arrested in California on murder charges after the burned remains of his wife were found, days after he claimed that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had taken her into custody. Police said the investigation revealed inconsistencies in his statements. The couple were also going through a divorce and were involved in a child custody dispute.

Husband Arrested On Murder Charges

The man identified as Gurinder Singh Gill, 28, was arrested on October 14, in connection with the death of his wife, Jasmine Gill, 30, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. He was taken to the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains in custody without bail. According to the sheriff’s office, Jasmine was last seen at her home in Sacramento on September 30. Her cousin reported her missing on October 4.

During the initial investigation, Gurinder told authorities that ICE agents had taken his wife into custody while she was checking the mail outside their home. However, detectives contacted ICE to check his claim. The federal agency confirmed that no enforcement activity had taken place at the couple’s residence.

Burned Remains Found In California

As the investigation continued, detectives found several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance. The case took a serious turn on October 1, when burned human remains were discovered in El Dorado County, California. Authorities later confirmed that the remains belonged to Jasmine.

Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gurinder on murder charges. On October 14, detectives located and arrested him. Police also carried out searches at two residences linked to him as part of the investigation. The sheriff’s office has not shared further details about the circumstances surrounding Jasmine’s death. The case remains under investigation.
