Tibet Earthquake: A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck Tibet's Nagqu on Thursday, causing panic among people in the Himalyan country. The epicenter of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake was located directly in Nagqu City. Due to its close proximity to the epicenter, shaking was intensely felt throughout the region.

The epicentre was in a high-altitude county in Nagqu, northern Tibet, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), and the average elevation within 5 km of the epicentre is about 4,864 metres, ‌CENC data showed. The epicentre was around 400 km away from the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.

The National Center for Seismology stated that the depth of the earthquake was 173 km. An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred in Tibet on October 22, 2026, at 08:03 PM IST, at a depth of 173 km, centered around coordinates 32.368° N and 93.853° E, National Center for Seismology said in an X post.

Seismotectonics Of The Himalaya And Vicinity

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGC), seismicity in the Himalaya dominantly results from the continental collision of the India and Eurasia plates, which are converging at a relative rate of 40-50 mm/year. Northward under thrusting of India beneath Eurasia generates numerous earthquakes and consequently makes this area one of the most seismically hazardous regions on Earth, it said on its website. The surface expression of the plate boundary is marked by the foothills of the north-south trending Sulaiman Range in the west, the Indo-Burmese Arc in the east and the east-west trending Himalaya Front in the north of India, it added.

1,243 People Dead In Nepal-Tibet Flood

Recently, the Nepal-Tibet border area witnessed a horrific natural disaster, flash floods, in which at least 1,243 people have lost their lives. On August 26, a massive ice-rock avalanche and glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered deadly debris flows along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, destroying several villages in the Himalayan nation.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah said the disaster's link to climate change must be strongly raised with the international community, as symbolic funerals were held by families of locals still missing after last week's flash floods. The death toll has surged to 1,243 as more bodies were recovered from eight districts affected by the flood, while 4,875 people remain missing a week after the floods devastated several towns and villages in the country.
