US Midterm Elections Impact: US President Donald Trump has admitted that the ongoing Iran war cost the Republican Party heavily in the US midterm elections but maintained that his decision to take military action against Tehran was necessary.

While admitting that the conflict cost Republicans heavily, Trump said he would make the same decision again as it was the "only answer" in the "long term".

He said voters were frustrated by surging fuel prices, which have been a consequence of the eight-month-old conflict. However, Trump argued that rising oil prices, rather than the war itself, were the primary reason behind voter dissatisfaction. He also pointed to the resumption of oil flows through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

"The Iran thing, we had to do, and we continue to do it. We have tremendous oil flowing out of the Hormuz Strait now. At the beginning, there was none. And, probably, that's the primary reason - the price, not the war, the price (of oil)," Trump said.

The remarks come after Democrats made significant gains in the midterm elections, taking control of Congress and several key state-level offices. The Republican setback could make it harder for Trump's administration to push ahead with its policies without facing opposition from Democrats.

The election setback has also raised questions about whether Trump will now change his approach towards the conflict, particularly as rising fuel prices have become a major concern for American voters.

With the 'blue wave' in Washington, here is how the US midterm election results could affect the world, from the Iran-Israel conflict and global fuel prices to international trade and Ukraine.

Iran-Israel War: Could Trump Push For Peace?

The ongoing conflict involving Iran and Israel remains one of the biggest concerns following the US midterm elections. Trump's political setback could encourage him to look for ways to end the conflict, especially as the war has pushed fuel prices higher and increased public dissatisfaction in the US.

Some Gulf governments believe Trump may now be more interested in reaching a peace agreement with Iran rather than launching another major military operation, Reuters reported.

The election results could also give Tehran an opportunity to negotiate with Washington. Iran may believe that Trump is under pressure to end the conflict and could be more willing to reach an agreement.

However, there is also a risk that Tehran could interpret Trump's political setback as a sign of weakness, potentially encouraging further military escalation.

Israel: Could US Support Come Under Pressure?

The election results could also affect Israel's relationship with the United States. With Democrats gaining control of Congress, Israel's military operations in Iran, Gaza and Lebanon could face greater scrutiny from US lawmakers.

There could also be increased pressure on longstanding US military support for Israel, including weapons sales and financial assistance.

The developments could create political challenges for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly as his rivals have argued that Israel is losing bipartisan support in the US under his leadership.

Fuel Prices: Could Petrol And Diesel Become Cheaper?

The Iran conflict has disrupted crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies from the Gulf, pushing up energy prices across the world.

Disruptions to oil supplies generally lead to higher crude prices, increasing the cost of petrol, diesel and other fuels. This puts additional pressure on households and businesses.

However, expectations of renewed US-Iran peace talks have already led to a decline in oil prices.

If Trump succeeds in reaching an agreement with Iran, oil supplies could become more stable, potentially bringing some relief to global energy markets.

For countries such as India, which depend heavily on imported crude oil, lower international oil prices could help reduce fuel costs and inflationary pressure.

However, there is no guarantee that petrol and diesel prices will fall immediately, as they also depend on government taxes, currency movements and other market factors.

Ukraine: Could US Military Aid Resume?

The election results could also influence America's support for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia. Trump has largely halted direct US financial and military assistance to Kyiv, despite support for aid among lawmakers from both major parties.

With greater influence in Congress, Democrats could push for fresh financial and military assistance to Ukraine.

If a proposed aid package receives enough Republican support to secure a two-thirds majority, lawmakers could even override a presidential veto.

However, any additional assistance is unlikely to reach Ukraine immediately. The country also faces an urgent shortage of US-made Patriot air defence interceptors, which are crucial for protecting its cities and energy infrastructure.

India-US Trade Deal: Could India Get Some Relief?

India could also benefit from the changing political situation in Washington, particularly in its ongoing trade negotiations with the US.

Trump has used tariffs, or taxes on imported goods, to pressure countries into making trade agreements with Washington.

However, a stronger Democratic presence in Congress could increase scrutiny of his tariff decisions and potentially limit his ability to impose certain trade restrictions.

This could give India more room to negotiate a favourable trade agreement with the US. New Delhi has been cautious about opening its agricultural sector to American products, as it wants to protect domestic farmers.

A weaker position for Trump in Congress could strengthen India's negotiating position and reduce concerns about sudden tariff decisions.

However, Trump still has certain legal powers to impose tariffs without fresh congressional approval, meaning that the impact may not be immediate.

What It Means For Global Nations

The US midterm election results could influence several major global developments, from wars and energy supplies to trade agreements and international economic relations.

The biggest immediate question is whether Trump will use his weakened political position as a reason to pursue peace talks with Iran or whether Tehran will interpret the results as an opportunity to take a tougher position, increasing tensions in the Middle East.

However, the wider impact will depend on how Trump responds to the election results and whether Democrats succeed in using their influence in Congress to challenge his policies.
