Operation Sindoor : India attacked Pakistan early on Wednesday following a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir last month. According to the Indian forces, it targeted the headquarters of Islamist military groups in missile attacks in Pakistan in an operation named "Operation Sindoor".
News agency PTI said that targets included the JeM headquarters in Bahawalpur (JeM refers to the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed) and the LeT headquarters in Muridke (LeT refers to the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba).
Pakistan Armed Forces spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry gives a statement after India attacked nine sites in Pakistan and PoK on Wednesday. He said eight Pakistanis were killed, 35 injured, and two remain missing.
This is what global leaders have said about the latest hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbours:
US President Donald Trump
"It's a shame. Just heard about it. I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past. They've been fighting for a long time. They've been fighting for many, many decades. I hope it ends very quickly."
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
"The Secretary-General is very concerned about the Indian military operations across the Line of Control and international border. He calls for maximum military restraint from both countries. The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan."
US monitoring situation closely, says Secretary of State Rubio
Marco Rubio echoed Trump's earlier comments that the situation hopefully ends quickly. Rubio added the US will continue to engage with both Indian and Pakistani leadership toward a peaceful resolution.
UAE urges both sides to restrain
The United Arab Emirates is asking for India and Pakistan “to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and avoid further escalation that could threaten regional and international peace,” according to a statement from UAE Deputy Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
“His Highness reaffirmed that diplomacy and dialogue remain the most effective means of peacefully resolving crises, and achieving the shared aspirations of nations for peace, stability, and prosperity,” the statement read.
