Pakistan’s federal government has firmly denied swirling rumours that President Asif Ali Zardari is being pressured to resign, or that Field Marshal Asim Munir, the country’s Army Chief, is preparing to assume the presidency. The clarification came from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who labelled the reports as “malicious” and linked them to hostile foreign propaganda.

On Thursday, Naqvi took to his official X account to categorically reject claims that a leadership shuffle was being considered. “There has been no discussion, nor does any such idea exist, about the President being asked to step down,” he said. He emphasised that the civil and military leadership remain united and that those spreading these rumours are attempting to destabilise Pakistan from within and abroad.

Speculations Sparked By Field Marshal Title

The speculation about General Asim Munir’s political ambitions gained momentum after hiselevation to the rank of Field Marshal, making him only the second officer in Pakistan’s history to receive the title. Given Pakistan’s long and complex history of military coups and army-led governments, many saw the promotion as a signal of increased political clout and possibly even aspirations to the presidency.

Government officials have repeatedly insisted that no such plans exist. Naqvi stated that the rumours are not just baseless but are being deliberately spread by entities hostile to Pakistan’s stability. He asserted, “We are fully aware of who is behind the malicious campaign targeting President Zardari, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir.”

Zardari-Munir Relationship Is ‘Strong And Respectful’

Naqvi also sought to quell any notion of a rift between President Zardari and Field Marshal Munir, calling their relationship “strong and respectful.” He claimed the rumours are being spread by those who are “disturbed by our unity” and who stand to gain politically or strategically from such false narratives.

Speaking earlier in Sukkur, Naqvi had warned journalists and the public not to believe unverified social media rumours. He reiterated the same sentiment this week, pledging that the government would take “whatever action necessary to make Pakistan strong again, InshAllah.”
