Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a grave warning following a deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad, declaring that the country is effectively “in a state of war”. The blast, which killed at least 12 people and injured more than 25, struck near the Islamabad District Judicial Complex on Tuesday afternoon, sparking panic among lawyers, staff, and residents in the vicinity.

The explosion occurred around 12:30 pm in the capital’s G-11 district. According to officials, the bomb was detonated inside a parked vehicle near the complex’s entrance, igniting several nearby cars. The intensity of the blast was so powerful that the sound was reportedly heard up to six kilometres away. Police and emergency teams rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area as investigators began assessing the damage.

Eyewitnesses Describe Chaos And Panic

Eyewitness accounts painted a harrowing picture. Lawyer Rustam Malik told AFP he heard a deafening bang immediately after parking his car. Upon returning to the gate, he saw “two dead bodies lying” and “several cars…on fire.” Most of the victims are believed to be lawyers and court staff who were present during peak business hours.

In a post on X, Defence Minister Asif said the attack must serve as a wake-up call. He argued that trusting negotiations with the Taliban-led government in Kabul would be “futile” under current circumstances, accusing Afghanistan’s leadership of allowing militant groups to operate freely across the border.

Allegations Against Kabul Leadership

“The rulers of Kabul can stop terrorism in Pakistan,” Asif wrote, “but bringing this war all the way to Islamabad is a message from Kabul, to which, praise be to God, Pakistan has the full strength to respond.” He added that the violence reaching the capital signals a direct escalation, one that Pakistan cannot ignore.

President Asif Ali Zardari also condemned what he described as a “suicide blast,” expressing condolences to the victims’ families and pledging government support for the injured. Security agencies have heightened surveillance across major cities, fearing further attacks.

Over recent years, Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing sanctuary to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), whose insurgency has intensified along the border. While Kabul denies harbouring militants, Pakistan insists the Taliban are capable of halting cross-border terrorism but are choosing not to act decisively.
