Pakistan is facing questions over its role in the US-Iran peace agreement after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif quickly removed a claim that Islamabad would host an official signing ceremony in Switzerland. The change came after Iran clarified that no such ceremony was planned and that the agreement had already been signed digitally.

Sharif Deletes Post About Switzerland Ceremony

In a post on X, Sharif announced that the United States and Iran had reached a peace agreement. He also said that Pakistan, with support from Qatar, would host an official signing ceremony in Switzerland on June 19. The now-deleted paragraph stated: “Pakistan, with the support of co-mediator the State of Qatar, will host the official ceremony as scheduled on 19 June 2026 in Switzerland, to commemorate this landmark event and commence with the technical level talks."

However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei later said the memorandum of understanding would be signed electronically and that there would be no ceremony in Switzerland. “The plan for the negotiating teams to be in Geneva is in place, but the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will be digital and a signing ceremony will not be held in Switzerland," Baqaei was quoted as saying by Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

He later confirmed that the text had been finalised after being signed by both sides. Following Iran’s clarification, Sharif deleted his original post and reposted it without the paragraph about Pakistan hosting the June 19 event. The revised post still claimed that the agreement had been “endorsed by me as the mediator”, but it no longer mentioned any signing ceremony in Switzerland.

Pakistan's Role In Question

The episode has raised questions about how closely Pakistan was coordinating with the US and Iran on an agreement that Islamabad has presented as a major diplomatic achievement. This is not the first time that Sharif’s post on Iran-US talks has raised questions. Earlier on April 8, a social media post by Sharif urging Trump to delay military action against Iran triggered a storm of controversy after users spotted what appeared to be a drafting error suggesting external authorship.

In that particular post, Sharif had appealed for a two-week extension to allow diplomacy in the West Asia conflict. Shortly after it was published, users circulated screenshots of the post's edit history showing it initially carried the line: "Draft - Pakistan's PM Message on X." The draft label appeared to have been inadvertently included in the original post before being removed in a subsequent edit. The gaffe gave the impression that the Pakistani prime minister had merely 'cut and pasted' the message, raising questions about who authored text.
