Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) to be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, in response to India’s firm diplomatic and security measures following the Pahalgam terror attack. The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar through a post on social media platform X.
“The Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif @CMShehbaz has convened the meeting of the National Security Committee on Thursday morning 24th April 2025 to respond to the Indian Government’s statement of this evening,” Dar wrote.

The NSC is Pakistan’s top decision-making body on national security matters and comprises senior civilian and military officials. It is convened only in instances of significant external threats or major national security developments. The urgency of this meeting highlights the gravity with which Islamabad is viewing India’s sweeping policy shifts following the deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
On Wednesday, India temporarily suspended the Indus Water Treaty, a landmark water-sharing agreement signed with Pakistan in 1960, and announced the downgrading of diplomatic ties. This includes the expulsion of Pakistani military attachés from the Indian capital. Additionally, visa services for Pakistani nationals have been halted, and the Attari-Wagah land crossing has been closed.
Pahalgam Attack Triggers Diplomatic Fallout
The Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians were killed and dozens more injured, has drawn widespread condemnation across India. According to Indian authorities, the attack bore clear signs of cross-border involvement. In response, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met late Wednseday night to chart India’s course of action.
Among the steps finalised by the CCS were:
- Immediate suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty cooperation.
- Closure of the Integrated Check Post at Attari.
- Cancellation of all existing visas issued to Pakistani nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES).
- Restriction of travel from Pakistan to India until further notice.
