Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday thanked US President Donald Trump for what he described as “bold and decisive leadership” in ending last month’s escalation between India and Pakistan. Speaking at Azerbaijan’s Victory Day parade in Baku, Sharif claimed Trump’s intervention helped secure a ceasefire and prevented a wider regional war.

Sharif credited the US leader for mediating between New Delhi and Islamabad during four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes in early May. “It was President Trump’s bold and decisive leadership that brought about the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, restoring peace in South Asia, averting a major war, and saving millions of people,” Sharif said. Pakistan’s political leadership has repeatedly echoed this claim, portraying the ceasefire as Washington-brokered.

India Sticks To Its Position

New Delhi, however, has firmly rejected suggestions of outside involvement. Indian officials have consistently maintained that the May 10 understanding was reached bilaterally and that no third party took part in the process. New Delhi has reiterated that India and Pakistan resolved the situation through direct communication channels and that the claim of external mediation is inaccurate.

Trump first announced the ceasefire on social media, declaring that the two countries had agreed to a “full and immediate” halt to hostilities after what he described as a “long night” of US-mediated talks. Since then, he has repeatedly stated that he personally “helped settle” the conflict.While India denies Washington’s involvement, Trump’s remarks have fuelled diplomatic conversation across the region.

Pakistan’s Stand: Peace With Conditions

Sharif stressed that Pakistan seeks peaceful coexistence with its neighbours, though not at the expense of national sovereignty. “Pakistan desires peace, but it will not allow anyone to challenge its sovereignty or undermine territorial integrity,” he said, referencing recent tensions.

Pakistan and Turkey's armed forces participated in the Victory Day parade, marching alongside Azerbaijani troops. The ceremony also featured a flypast of JF-17 Thunder jets, a symbol of Islamabad-Baku defence cooperation.
