Islamabad Express Train Derailment: At least 30 passengers were injured when several coaches of the Islamabad Express train derailed outside Lahore on Friday evening, leading to quick rescue efforts and an investigation ordered by the government. The train was traveling from Lahore to Rawalpindi when it derailed at Kala Shah Kaku, Sheikhupura district, some 50 kilometers from Lahore, said Pakistan Railways.

In a late-night statement, Pakistan Railways confirmed that 10 coaches of the Islamabad Express derailed, and at least 30 passengers were injured, three of them critically. "Rescue teams were immediately sent to the scene and transferred the injured to nearby hospitals for immediate medical care," added the statement. Emergency response personnel, including paramedics and rescue teams, arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. Official confirmation was made that some passengers were trapped in the derailed coaches initially and were attempted to be rescued safely. A railway spokesperson said the derailment occurred about 30 minutes after the train departed from Lahore Railway Station. No fatalities have been reported so far.

Order For Probe

This is the third incident in the last 15 days. Three coaches of the Quetta-bound Jaffer Express train derailed due to an explosion on 28th July, leaving one injured in Pakistan's southeast Sindh province. Earlier on a Jaffar Express derailed on 17th july following a series of blasts targeted at the railway track at Jacobabad in Pakistan's Sindh province.Federal Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has taken serious notice of the incident. He instructed the CEO of Pakistan Railways and the divisional superintendent to personally visit the accident site and oversee relief efforts. Minister Abbasi has also asked for a formal investigation into the reason behind the derailment and instructed officials to provide a detailed report in seven days.

The derailment adds to a series of rail accidents in Pakistan, where the railway system continues to struggle with decades of under-investment, outdated tracks, and aging signal infrastructure. In 2023, at least 30 people lost their lives when a passenger train derailed in Nawabshah, Sindh province.
